Argentina bidding to secure last 16 spot
Poland lead the way in World Cup Group C but they may need to rely on results elsewhere to progress as they take on Argentina in their final first round fixture on Wednesday.
The South American heavyweights went into the tournament among the favourites but were then stunned by Saudi Arabia in their opener, losing 2-1 in one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament.
Argentina were cruising and a goal to the good at half time in that game but complacency perhaps crept in as they suffered an embarrassing defeat. La Albiceleste followed that up with an assured display against Mexico, recording a 2-0 victory, and they should have too much for a Poland side who have rode their luck in their opening games.
Poles lacking in attack
Poland have arguably the best centre forward in world football in their ranks in Robert Lewandowski but they are struggling to create for the Barcelona forward.
The Poles have looked toothless in attack so far and they offered very little in a 0-0 draw with Mexico in their opener, while they were dominated for large periods against Saudi Arabia and there was more than a hint of smash-and-grab about their 2-0 victory over the Green Falcons.
That suggests they may struggle to create any openings against Argentina’s accomplished defence, and an Argentina win to nil has real appeal here for our main bet.
The South Americans have conceded just twice across their last seven games and have won six of those to nil.
More Messi magic can inspire Argentina
Unsurprisingly, Lionel Messi has starred for Argentina in Qatar and has had a hand in all three of their goals – scoring twice and assisting the other.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward struck from the spot against Saudi Arabia and will be on penalty duties again, and has scored in each of his last five games for his country – hitting an incredible 12 goals in total during that run.
An anytime effort for Messi stands out as a goalscorer bet, while a 2-0 win for Argentina is the correct score selection as Poland have only conceded more than twice in one of their last 18 games across all competitions.
