Tip Reasoning

  • New York City have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six meetings with the Portland Timbers.
  • Portland Timbers have won six straight games.
  • The hosts have scored in every home game since July – 14 games.

Providence Park is a fortress

It all comes down to this. The chance to make history as the MLS Cup final takes place at Providence Park in Portland.

This will be the third time that hosts Portland Timbers have reached the final and the 2015 winners will be hopeful of lifting the trophy come full time. It’ll be the first time they’ve hosted the occasion in their history and they will hope the script is written for them to win it on home turf in front of their own fans. It’s on home soil that the Timbers have played some of their best football this season and it’s seen Providence Park turn into somewhat of a fortress as they won 11 of their 17 games in the regular season.

New York City arrive in the final coming off the back of a 2-1 victory against Philadelphia Union. It was a close encounter with both teams missing some key players, but in particular, Philly who had 11 players missing due to health and safety protocols. The visitors like to dictate the play and keep possession of the ball. They were without Golden Boot winner Valentin Castellanos for their match against Philly due to suspension but they welcome him back here and it serves as a major boost for the side from The Bronx.

Portland Timbers time to shine

There’s no denying that Castellanos coming back into the fold is a huge boost for New York City, but we think this is Portland Timbers year and we’re backing them to win. They have home advantage in their fortress and will be in front of their own fans. They play exceptional football at Providence Park and have experience in this stage of the competition. We think they get the win and do so by a 2-1 scoreline.
