We use stars to rate our confidence in our tips, with 3 being most confident to 1 being the least.
Portland Timbers 2-1 @ 9/1

Reason For Portland Timbers vs Orlando City Predictions

  • Both teams scored in 100% of Portland Timbers’ tournament matches so far.
  • Both teams notched in five of Orlando City’s six competition games to date.
  • Over 2.5 goals hit the net in five of Timbers’ six tournament fixtures.
  • Orlando scored exactly one goal in three of their last four outings.

Tournament reaches its climax

After 50 games and 143 goals in across a competition spanning an entire month, the MLS Is Back Tournament finally reaches its conclusion on Wednesday, as the Portland Timbers lock horns with Orlando City SC at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Field.

The Timbers – who arrived as one of the pre-tournament favourites – have been convincing from the very start of play with impressive group stage showings against both LA clubs and Houston to finish top in Group F.

Their only uncertain moments came in the Round of 16 when they were pushed all the way to penalties by a dogged FC Cincinnati outfit, though they haven’t looked back since with decisive victories against NYCFC and Philadelphia en-route to the final.

All time MLS greats Diego Valeri and Diego Chara have been key performers for manager Giovanni Savarese, though their star of the tournament so far has undoubtedly been Sebastian Blanco.

The midfielder from Argentina set a club record by notching assists in each of the first five games of the tournament, and the 32-year-old scored the eventual winning goal against the Union in the semifinal.

Orlando’s unexpected final appearance

Playing on the front foot under new coach Oscar Pareja, Orlando City have defied the odds to reach the MLS is Back Tournament Final – a climactic fixture they made via a tricky route.

Orlando had to navigate tough contests against the likes of NYCFC (No. 1 in the East in 2019), LAFC (Supporters’ Shield winners in 2019) and Philadelphia (semifinalists at MLS is Back) to reach Wednesday’s showpiece match.

Veterans Pedro Gallese and midfielder Mauricio Pereyra have performed manfully throughout their run, while young Americans Chris Meuller and Benji Michel have also shone – however, Portuguese winger Nani has again been their standout protagonist.

The ex-Man Utd superstar scored two of City’s goals in their 3-1 semi-final win over Minnesota, and Nani has looked every inch the seasoned international for the Lions.

Goals at both ends anticipated

In terms of the betting, the goals markets are the avenues worth exploring for Wednesday’s final.

Both teams found the net in 100% of Portland Timbers’ six previous matches in the tournament, while over 2.5 goals were registered in five of those six encounters.

34-year-old Portland stopper Steve Clark has yet to see a clean sheet in Florida, and we don’t expect the former DC United keeper to pick up his first shutout of the competition this week.

Similarly, Pedro Gallese saved his way to just one blank in Orlando’s charge to the final despite some fine overall displays between the sticks, and both teams found joy in the final third in five of City’s six tournament fixtures overall.

The numbers suggest we should expect goals to be notched at either end again this week, though with Timbers’ favoured to win, combining BTTS with an over 2.5 goals selection is a worthy exercise, especially at the prices quoted.

While Orlando’s appearance in final following an equal parts thrilling and unexpected adventure is deserved, they meet a more tactically robust Portland outfit armed with superior overall quality on Wednesday – and we expect that to tell come full time at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Field.

Even though Timbers have been modest goalscorers in Florida, netting exactly twice in four of their six fixtures so far, another brace should be enough to power them to victory against a City frontline that plundered exactly one goal in three of their last four.

With those factors considered, a 2-1 Portland Timbers victory looks a correct score prediction worth backing.
