Portsmouth vs Stoke City Predictions
Stoke Backed to Edge Low-Scoring Fratton Park Clash
Stoke’s games have been low-scoring this season, and Saturday’s clash at Fratton Park is unlikely to be any different.
No team has had more under 2.5 goals in the Championship than Stoke’s eight this term, and they have played eight consecutive games with fewer than three goals.
Stoke are 11 places above Portsmouth in the table, but just five points separate the two sides. The hosts are 17th with three wins, four draws and four losses, while Stoke are sixth having won five, drawn three and lost three.
Portsmouth are struggling to get wins, having failed to win six of their last seven Championship games, while Stoke have not won any of their last four away games.
Stoke lost 2-0 to Millwall on Tuesday in their last Championship outing and kept up their run of matches with under 2.5 goals. The visitors were priced as 11/5 outsiders to win the game, but still would have been hoping to be more competitive than the final margin of defeat.
Stoke have been impressive defensively this season, conceding just eight goals in the Championship – an average of 0.73 goals per game from 11 matches. They have let in five goals away from home so far, keeping a clean sheet last month against second-placed Middlesbrough in a 0-0 draw.
Both teams are struggling to find the back of the net. Portsmouth have scored only ten goals in 11 Championship games this season – an average of 0.91 goals per game – while Stoke have blanked in three of their last four away matches.
Stoke’s last four Championship away games have all finished with fewer than three goals and there have been under 2.5 goals in five of their last seven on the road.
Stoke can edge this, with a 1-0 correct score in favour of the visitors looking like a decent bet. Portsmouth have been poor at home, where they have won two and lost three, while Stoke have won two and lost two on the road. Two of Stoke’s five wins in the league this season have been by a 1-0 scoreline and three of Portsmouth’s four Championship defeats have come by the odd goal.
