Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Both teams have scored in 10 of Portsmouth’s last 12 home league matches and also in nine of West Brom’s last 10 Championship away fixtures.

West Bromwich Albion 2-1

Reason for tip

West Brom have scored multiple goals on each of their away trips this season and it would be no surprise to see that trend repeat against a Pompey side that shipped three in pretty comical fashion against Sunderland last time out. Portsmouth usually score at home as well, however, and West Brom’s defence is not as secure as their goals against column suggests as they conceded at both QPR and Stoke.

Josh Maja To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Josh Maja has scored four times in West Brom’s two away league games this season. Only one Championship player has a better scoring rate per 90 minutes this season.

Baggies must beat teams like Pompey

Portsmouth and West Brom meet for the first time in 15 years on Saturday and this trip to Fratton Park will put the visitors’ promotion credentials to the test.

Carlos Corberan’s side have begun the season in great form, taking 10 points from their first four matches with the two points dropped coming against another string contender in Leeds.

Albion are going to have to beat teams like Pompey, whose sole ambition right now is to get to 50 points and stay up, if they are going to remain in the top two places.

Hosts have a habit of conceding at home

Corberan has a settled side which could potentially be boosted by the return of Mikey Johnston in attack. Grady Diangana remains absent, but WBA claimed a 1-0 win over Swansea without him last time out.

As for Portsmouth, they will have to be better in both penalty areas than they were in a 3-1 home defeat to Sunderland before the international break. Defensively, they were all over the place with the Black Cats’ opener coming when a clearance hit Zak Swanson and rebounded over the line.

Sunderland’s second and third goals also exposed weaknesses at the back while Pompey needed a helping hand to claim a late consolation effort. Backing both teams to score makes sense in the wake of that performance and a recent record that shows 10 out of their last 12 games at Fratton Park have seen goals at both ends.
