Tip Reasoning

  • Lyon have the joint-worst attack away from home in Ligue 1
  • Nine of Rennes’ 12 Ligue 1 games have seen under 2.5 goals scored.
  • Just one of Rennes’ six home league fixtures have witnessed over 2.5 goals.

Finding their feet

Both these sides have shrugged off slow starts to their seasons and find themselves level on points with Rennes’ superior goal difference keeping them just in front of Lyon in 5th.

Former Lyon boss Bruno Genesio is in the Rennes dugout for his first full season and since his arrival in March, the red and blacks have lost just one of their 11 home league fixtures, (W8, D2).  The club are winless in six meetings at home to Lyon but seven wins in a nine-game unbeaten run leaves Rennes well-placed to break that duct.

Rennes drew 2-2 with Troyes last weekend but a 1-0 win in their last home league fixture over Strasbourg was their third home win in succession. The hosts followed that up with a 1-0 victory over Mura in the Europa Conference League meaning they have now gone four home games without conceding a goal.

Continental football hasn’t proved a distraction for Rennes either with the Brittany club defeating both Strasbourg and PSG (2-0) immediately following their last two ECL games.

Work to do

Despite rallying over the past couple of months Lyon are still having problems. Peter Bosz’s side lost each of their first three Ligue 1 matches but have lost just two of their last 10 against the top two (PSG, Nice) since. Both defeats occurred the weekend following a Europa League game.

Lyon got the better of Lens last weekend to climb to 6th and secured their position in the Europa League round of 32 with a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to Sparta Prague on Thursday.

However, on the road, they are still struggling. Lyon have scored just five goals in five away league fixtures and have taken just four points from a possible 15 on their travels.

Little between them

With Rennes tending to fare better after their European exploits it perhaps gives the hosts the edge here. However, Lyon have had Rennes’ number in recent years and are on a steady run themselves but for a few travel problems. It’s a tough one to call but with these sides neck and neck in the table, a 1-1 draw seems the most probable outcome.

Aguerd to keep up scoring run

Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd has scored in both of Rennes’ last two league matches. The centre-back is averaging 0.92 shots per 90 minutes and at 6 ft 2, is a real threat from set plays so get on the Moroccan for a goal anytime.
