Despite a heartbreaking defeat to Flamengo in the final of the Copa Libertadores, River cannot afford to feel down in the dumps. Indeed, Los Millonarios are trying to compete for the Superliga title and certainly showed no signs of a hangover last weekend, coming from 2-0 down in Rosario to beat Newell’s 3-2.

San Lorenzo looking to continue recent improvement

It’s fair to say San Lorenzo’s decision to bring back Juan Antonio Pizzi as manager failed, but El Ciclon are showing signs of improvement under new boss Diego Monarriz. Indeed, under the former, the team managed to go on a run of 5 defeats from 6 games but have really woken up in recent weeks since he departed.

Under Monarriz, San Lorenzo have now claimed 7 points from their last 3 matches, beating Argentinos Juniors and Patronato in the process to shoot up to 11th place. Whilst they’re not the force they once were, San Lorenzo should certainly be competing a bit higher up than they currently are and will be looking for a strong result to sign off the year here.

Plenty of action is expected

Ultimately, this should be a very open and exciting game. River’s attacking quality speaks for itself and they always approach games in an aggressive manner whilst for all their struggles, there’s plenty of potency to this San Lorenzo team, with their issues very clearly coming at the other end of the pitch.
