Roma to Win and Under 3.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Roma have won eight of their last nine home matches, while only one of their last 16 games has contained over 3.5 goals. Sampdoria, meanwhile, have scored just 10 goals in 13 away league games this term, losing on nine occasions.

Roma 1-0

Reason for tip

Roma have not won a game by more than a two-goal margin since September, though each of their last nine victories have been accompanied by a clean sheet. Sampdoria have the worst attacking record in Serie A with just 16 goals all season, but they may manage to keep things tight for a while.

Roma vs Sampdoria Predictions

  • Roma have won eight of their last nine home games across all competitions – excluding their ‘away’ Rome derby loss at the Stadio Olimpico last time out.
  • Sampdoria have lost nine of their 13 away games in Serie A this term, only scoring 10 times in those matches.
  • Roma have only seen over 3.5 goals scored once in their last 16 games.

Giallorossi must bounce back

A week, as they say, can be a long time in football. Roma boss Jose Mourinho gleefully mocked Lazio’s Europa Conference League exit after seeing his own team progress to the Europa League quarter-finals by beating Real Sociedad, but the Giallorossi’s rivals had the last laugh with a 1-0 derby victory before the international break. That result means Roma have lost three of their last four Serie A matches and have slipped out of the top four. Sunday’s visit of struggling Sampdoria represents an opportunity for Mourinho’s men to get their campaign back on track.

Few teams have been as inconsistent as Roma in Serie A this term – Mourinho’s men have won eight of their last nine home matches across all competitions, but they went into the international break off the back of a three-game winless run. The Giallorossi have tended to keep things solid since the turn of the year – only one of their last 16 matches has contained over 3.5 goals – while they have not won a game by more than a two-goal margin since September. While Sampdoria are in dire straights, Roma – as is often the case – may not be worth backing for a convincing win.

Sampdoria look destined for relegation, but they did at least salvage some pride prior to the two-week hiatus, pushing Juventus in a 4-2 defeat before beating Verona 3-1 to end an 11-game winless streak. Dejan Stankovic’s men have failed to net in eight of their last 12 matches, but they have at least been more competitive in recent weeks – drawing with Inter Milan, Monza and Salernitana in their last seven outings. There will be no pressure on Samp in the capital, and that may help them keep things interesting.

Roma worth backing – but Mourinho’s men often unconvincing

Roma’s strong home record and Sampdoria’s attacking woes mean backing the Giallorossi appears a prudent play for Sunday’s game, but adding under 3.5 goals into the mix should help punters secure additional value. Roma often flatter to deceive and Samp could frustrate them for a while.

Meanwhile, a cagey 1-0 Roma victory could represent a solid correct score play – each of the Giallorossi’s last nine wins have been accompanied by a clean sheet.
