Northern Ireland are capable of springing a surprise in Bucharest when they face Romania in a friendly on Friday.

Michael O’Neill’s men endured a difficult Euro 2024 qualifying programme, losing seven of their 10 games in Group H. But they finished on a high with a 2-0 home defeat of a pretty strong Denmark side while playing without either new star Conor Bradley or veteran star Jonny Evans.

O’Neill now has a bit of fresh talent to work with as the likes of Trai Hume, Brodie Spencer and Shea Charles get regular games for Championship clubs. Northern Ireland have a remarkable record in games like this over the last few years – having won four of their last five away friendlies, including victories in Czechia and Luxembourg.

Romania rarely win home friendlies

In contrast, Romania appear to struggle when there are no qualification points at stake. Edward Iordanescu’s men have failed to win five of their last six friendly games, losing four.

Although they will miss the experience of Evans at the back, Northern Ireland have plenty of dynamism in midfield and attack to make this very tough for the hosts.
