San Lorenzo vs Estudiantes Predictions

Saturday’s Superliga action sees San Lorenzo going up against Estudiantes de la Plata at the Estadio Pedro Bidegain. Plenty of action is expected at both ends of the pitch as each side chases the 3 points on offer.

Hosts San Lorenzo come into the game off the back of disappointment, having almost picked up their first win under new boss Jorge Almiron away at Aldosivi last weekend, only to be denied by a last minute goal, with the match ending 2-2. Said result leaves El Ciclon in 22nd place and the transfer window opening cannot come soon enough for them, with several reinforcements desperately needed.

Indeed, San Lorenzo’s squad looks a shadow of what it’s been in years gone by and the team have really struggled throughout the campaign so far. They’ve won just 2 of their 13 Superliga matches and have taken just 2 points from their last 5 games, meaning improvement needs to found quickly. The appointment of Jorge Almiron was seen as a coup when he first came in but if performances don’t improve in the near feature, pressure could well begin to mount on him and as such, Saturday’s clash is a very important one.

Meanwhile, having lost just 1 of their last 8 Superliga matches, winning 3 of said clashes, Estudiantes arrive in reasonably strong form and will be aiming to take home a positive result. Nonetheless, currently standing 15th due to their poor start to the season, Los Pincharratas are hardly flying either and will need a strong second half of the year if they are to secure a continental spot.

Given they’ve won just 1 of their 7 away matches so far this term, Leandro Benitez’s troops are hardly a powerful outfit on their travels and that does have to be a concern coming into this match. However, with San Lorenzo in such a fragile state, the visitors will likely bring an attacking game plan to the pitch and will be trying to claim a rare away triumph.

Ultimately though, we’re expecting a fairly even but open game. San Lorenzo are typically a fairly strong outfit on their own patch and having shown slight improvement last weekend, particularly going forward, they should be able to give an Estudiantes outfit in slightly better condition a good game.

Whilst calling a full time result looks a tough call, backing both nets to be hit looks an excellent way to play given the open style of game we’re likely to see. Both teams have scored in 4 of San Lorenzo’s last 6 Superliga home games and with goals having been seen at either end in Estudiantes’ last 4 matches, we expect to see both sides notching, possibly in a 1-1 draw.
