Sao Paulo have been a bit of an enigma this season. Their progress into the last four of the Copa Libertadores suggested they would be well equipped to be contenders in the Brazilian top flight but they are 10 points off the top and down in mid-table at the half-way point in the season. They’ve also lost their coach with André Jardine now occupying the hotseat on a temporary basis. He led them to a morale boasting 2-1 win at Santa Cruz last time out to end a 4 game winless streak in the league with Andres Chavez bagging a brace.

They come up against a Botafogo side that are in the relegation zone and certainly in real danger of dropping out of the league. They’ve picked up some good results at home, where they are unbeaten in 6 league games but on the road they are nowhere near as solid. They’ve lost their last two away games at Chapecoense and Ponte Preta and have lost 18 of their last 22 Serie A games in total either side of one season in Serie B.

There have been a few signs in recent weeks that Sao Paulo might just be getting back on track and in ordinary circumstances this is a game you’d strongly fancy them to win. It’s most surprising that they’ve lost 3 home games already in the league this term as it’s not like them at all but they were all against stronger sides than Botafogo.
