Freiburg vs Schalke Predictions

  • Schalke are the only Bundesliga outfit outside of the bottom four to have won fewer than ten league games this term.
  • Freiburg have kept five home clean sheets in the league this term.
  • Schalke have failed to score in seven of their 16 away contests in the Bundesliga this season.

Home form central to Freiburg’s top-eight push

Freiburg are out of the race for a Europa League berth in the Bundesliga but can secure eighth spot with victory over Schalke at the Schwarzwald-Stadion, where a large proportion of their points have been accumulated this term.

Eight of Freiburg’s 12 wins in the Bundesliga this season have come at their Black Forest home, with Borussia Monchengladbach and Hertha Berlin their latest scalps on home soil.

Both of those sides offer more in the final third than shot-shy Schalke, who have endured a miserable Ruckrunde – second half of the season – and are winless in their last 15 league assignments. That run has featured defeats away to Cologne, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Eintracht Frankfurt, all sides worse off in the standings than plucky Freiburg.

David Wagner’s men had European aspirations of their own not too long ago but have lost six of their last eight matches, their only points since the restart coming in draws with Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen.

Schalke struggling in absence of creative outlets

Central to their demise have been the simultaneous absences of Amine Harit and Suat Serdar, who have scored 13 of the club’s 38 league goals this term, with Guido Burgstaller, Benito Raman and Ahmed Kutucu struggling to shoulder the scoring burden in the meantime.

The resultant lack of creativity in the final third has meant they have not scored more than once in any of their last 15 league games and are now set for a bottom-half finish.

Their chances of scoring this time around are also hindered by the fact Freiburg are one of the sturdiest defensive units in the division, having conceded only 17 goals in their 16 league assignments.

Low-scoring clash on the cards on final day

That coupled with the likes of Lucas Holer, Luca Waldschmidt, Vincenzo Grifo and Nils Petersen in the final third suggests Freiburg should have finished the season on a positive note and a home win is the best match prediction.

Freiburg’s home games have featured an average of only 2.25 goals per game this term and, given that both teams have scored in only three of Schalke’s last eight away contests in the league, punters should consider a low-scoring angle when making a correct score prediction.

With that in mind, 1-0, a scoreline which Freiburg have won by against Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim and Borussia Monchengladbach at home this term, could be the way to go.
