Reason For Sheffield United vs Southampton Predictions

Sheffield United can jump to as high as 3rd spot in the Premier League if they can beat Southampton and other results go their way this weekend, a scenario that highlights just how impressive a start the Blades have made to life in the top flight.

In their four Premier League fixtures since the summer, Sheffield United are shown enough to suggest that they will give anyone a game this season, and their 2-2 comeback draw at Chelsea before the international break was the most recent example of the excellent team spirit and ability in their ranks.

Despite the excellent point they picked up at Stamford Bridge, Blades boss Chris Wilder will know that his team’s results at Bramall Lane are likely to be pivotal in deciding the club’s fortunes this season however.

United have played three matches in all competitions at Bramall Lane so far this term, winning two (1-0 vs Crystal Palace, 2-1 vs Blackburn), and losing the other to Leicester City (1-2).

Sheffield United scored just one in that home reverse to Leicester, and that low goal haul pattern has been a feature of their matches this season. United scored only once in three of their five competitive fixtures since the summer, and twice in the other two.

Luckily for the Blades, they face a Southampton side with similar problems in the final third on Saturday. The Saints are in the midst of a three-match unbeaten run, though goals are continuing to be elusive for Ralph Hasenhüttl s men.

Southampton hit just four goals in their first five games of the season in league and cup, though the Saints’ lack of bite in attack has been with them since last year. In total, Southampton scored one or fewer goals in a staggering 17 of their last 24 Premier League fixtures.

On Saturday, the Saints take their low scoring roadshow to Bramall Lane, where Sheffield United have won 12 of their last 16 matches, losing only twice.

We expect Sheffield United to make home advantage count again this weekend, though it makes sense to couple a home win with and under 2.5 total goals selection given the respective teams underwhelming attacking statistics.

Our correct score prediction follows along those same lines, and we’re tipping Sheffield United to eke out a 1-0 win against Southampton – and there is a huge chance that the winning goal will be plundered in the second half of Saturday’s contest.

Remarkably, neither Sheffield United or Southampton have managed to score in the first-half of a Premier League game this season. Leaning on that statistic, we think there is great value in backing the second period to be the highest scoring half at Bramall Lane this weekend.
