Tip Reasoning

It’s not been a great campaign for Sligo, who find themselves 16 points adrift of the coveted top three, while their recent form hasn’t been great either. Fortunately, a home game against bottom-of-the-pile UC Dublin presents Monday’s hosts with an excellent opportunity to put three points on the board.

Back in May, when they went on a seven-game unbeaten run, it looked as though Sligo were on the up, though they’ve since gone backwards, winning none of their previous four in the league, two of which they’ve lost.

However, while recent form suggests that their dreams of challenging for the top three have evaporated, Sligo have performed respectably at home of late. Winning games hasn’t exactly been their thing, as they’ve emerged victorious from just two of their last seven at The Showgrounds, but they’ve made a habit of avoiding defeat during that time. Rovers have either won or drawn each of their last seven at home. They’ve also done well at the back during that time, conceding just five goals, shipping more than once in none of their last seven in front of a home crowd, though it’s a good job, as they’ve been anything but prolific going the other way, notching just seven in seven, scoring more than once in just two of those seven.

They may not be prolific scorers, or prolific winners for that matter, but Sligo’s rather sturdy antics on home soil bode very well ahead of a match against UC Dublin side that has found goals extremely hard to come by on the road.

Winners of zero out of nine on their travels, UC Dublin have had a torrid time of it away from home this season. In those nine defeats, they’ve conceded no less than 20 goals and have scored just two in reply. Sligo are anything but Ireland’s most menacing home team, though their efforts suggest that they really ought to get the better of the worst team in the division.

From a betting point of view, ‘Sligo -1 Asian Handicap’ makes plenty of appeal. Given that the visitors have made next to no offensive headway away from home this season, the defensively astute hosts have the perfect opportunity to record a pleasing win. If they can continue to defend as they have done at home of late, then Sligo should have few problems hurting a travelling team who’ve lost five of their last six away games by at least a two-goal margin.
