Ligue 2 contenders do battle on opening day

The opening weekend of the Ligue 2 season sees two of 2021-22’s strongest outfits in Sochaux and Paris FC – who finished fifth and fourth respectively before losing in the play-offs – face off. While Sochaux went one step closer to promotion than Paris did after a 2-1 play-off victory when the duo last met in May, another hard-fought affair is expected on Monday.

Indeed, the hosts built last season’s promotion charge on a fine defensive record, conceding just 34 league goals all campaign – a record only bettered by Ligue 2’s top two. Meanwhile, seven of their final 10 regular-season games contained under 2.5 goals, with Omar Daf’s team’s shortcomings arriving at the sharp end of the pitch; their 47 goals in 38 league games was bettered by six sides in a very low-scoring division.

The visitors’ record of 35 goals conceded, meanwhile, made them the league’s fourth-best defensive outfit, while five of their final six games of 2021-22 saw a maximum of two goals. Paris’ five pre-season outings, meanwhile, have contained a total of just 10 goals, making under 2.5 match goals a solid play when they begin the new season against another solid rearguard.

Under 2.5 goals a prudent play

Considering the excellent defensive records of the two teams, both of whom are expected to challenge for a play-off place as a minimum once again this term, we’re tipping under 2.5 goals to be scored on Monday.

Meanwhile, Sochaux did win two of the teams’ three head-to-head meetings last season, two of which were also won by whoever was at home, so a 1-0 win for Daf’s men could be a decent correct score prediction.
