We use stars to rate our confidence in our tips, with 3 being most confident to 1 being the least.

Reason For Southampton vs Newcastle Predictions

  • Southampton have only won four of their 14 Premier League home games this season.
  • Newcastle have avoided defeat in five of their last seven league matches, drawing four of them.
  • The Saints have only kept a clean sheet twice in their 14 home league fixtures this season.
  • Southampton have scored 1.14 goals per home game this season, while Newcastle have managed 0.86 per away game.

Poor run of form leaves Saints fans downtrodden

Southampton returned to losing ways last weekend with a very poor performance away to the struggling West Ham, ending the 90 minutes 3-1 down to make it four defeats from their last six Premier League matches.

This poor run of form has pushed them back into contention for relegation, although with seven points separating them from 18th place Bournemouth they will still feel confident of avoiding the drop.

That being said, it has been a truly disappointing couple of months for Saints fans. They enjoyed a promising festive period as they battled to four wins in a run of five games, but since then it’s gone downhill for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. Even at home they have won just two of their last six in the league, losing to West Ham, Wolves and Burnley in this period.

Midweek success to boost morale in Newcastle

Newcastle aren’t exactly flying high either, sitting one position and two points behind their opponents and also knowing that a sustained spell of poor form could see them plunged into the relegation battle.

Scoring goals has been a major issue for the Magpies, but their midweek FA Cup success will have brought some much needed confidence back to the players, and they should feel reasonably confident of getting a goal against a Southampton defence that have kept just two clean sheets at St Mary’s Stadium this season.

Shared spoils on the cards at St Mary’s Stadium

Considering their current run, it’s surprising to see Southampton touted as odds on favourites. Newcastle may be struggling, but they have still only lost two of their last seven Premier League outings and they’re facing a side that were comfortably beaten by the torrid West Ham last weekend. With this in mind, we think backing a Newcastle Win or Draw Double Chance is a good shout.

We’re expecting the spoils to be shared as well. Southampton have scored 1.14 goals per home game this season, and if you discount their anomalous 9-0 drubbing by Leicester they have conceded 1.61 goals per home game. Newcastle have scored 0.86 goals per away game and have found the net in three of their last five on the road, so a 1-1 correct score prediction is our choice.
