Tip Reasoning

  • Stockport County are unbeaten in their last 18 games, winning 11 and drawing seven.
  • Hartlepool United have scored in ten of their last 12 away games.
  • Rhys Oates has scored eight goals in his last eight National League appearances.

Back Oates to bag against Hatters

Stockport County must beware an in-form forward when they host Hartlepool United in the National League play-off semi-final at Edgeley Park.

Rhys Oates looks rather over-priced to score anytime – even if it would be against the division’s best defence – given the Pools striker has averaged a goal a game in his last eight appearances.

The 26-year-old bagged a brace and assisted his side’s third in their 3-0 demolition of Bromley last weekend and could make the difference in a tight game in the north-west.

Both these sides have embarked on long unbeaten runs this season with County currently undefeated in 18 while Pools’ 16-match sequence that was ended by Bromley in May has just been avenged.

And there won’t be much between them on Sunday, although the home side will go off favourites to make it through to the decider at Ashton Gate.

Simon Rusk’s men have picked up more points on their travels than at home this term, although they are also unbeaten in 14 at Edgeley Park.

The majority of those results were draws, however, and with that in mind we think the Hatters are too short in the 90 minutes prices.

Pools have not been able to translate their brilliant home form into away performances either but they did deserve a share of the spoils when the sides met in Stockport last March.

Both teams look a good bet to score here because Stockport have only been shut out once in their last 11 home games and Pools have banged in 17 goals during their last nine away-days.

Hartlepool have recorded just one clean sheet from their last eight matches, but with Oates in such good goalscoring form the visitors can push the Hatters all the way to a 2-2 draw.
