Stoke City vs Brentford Predictions

  • Stoke beat Watford in the previous round.
  • The Potters have won seven of their nine home games in all competitions (D1, L1).
  • Brentford are likely to make a number of changes, as they did against Oldham in their last EFL Cup fixture.

Potters a problem for Premier League visitors

Stoke take on Brentford in the EFL Cup on Wednesday in what could be a competitive affair at the bet365 Stadium.

The Potters have already knocked out one Premier League team after seeing off Watford 3-1 away from home in the last round, while Brentford made light work of League Two Oldham with a resounding 7-0 win in West London.

Bees boss Thomas Frank made a number of changes in the win over the Latics as Danish duo Mathias Jorgensen and Mathias Jensen were the only players who started that game and started against Leicester last weekend. Stoke counterpart Michael O’Neill also made plenty of changes in the previous round against Watford but regulars such as James Chester and Sam Surridge were involved.

One issue with this competition is there is a certain amount of guesswork in regards to what line-ups the respective teams will go with, but it does seem as if Stoke may name closer to their regular XI than Brentford will do. Frank may also keep the faith with his second string after that commanding win over Oldham despite Stoke being a big step up.

The Potters have been strong at home all season and have just one defeat, coming against Championship league leaders Bournemouth in their last home game, and they also beat Brentford 3-2 in Staffordshire last season in the league. With Brentford expected to make changes, a home win at a big price does look worth backing here considering Stoke won at Watford in the previous round. Stoke have managed four clean sheets in their last seven home games and have scored 14 goals in total in nine home games across all competitions so a 2-0 win for the Championship club has some appeal in the correct score market.
