Reason For Sunderland vs Ipswich Predictions

  • Only two teams have conceded less home goals than Sunderland in League 1 this season.
  • Sunderland are in the top six for both shots and shots on target conceded at home. Ipswich are in the top six for neither on the road.

Stadium of Light tough place to go

Sunderland have still got a reasonable amount of work to do if they’re to establish themselves as play-off frontrunners, but they’re certainly moving in the right direction, while their efforts at home continue to be pleasing.

For some time, a lack of goals has held the Black Cats back. That problem isn’t exactly a thing of the past, though Saturday’s hosts are very, very tough to get the better of at this venue, which is pleasing. Sunderland have lost none of their last five at home, while they’ve only lost one out of 14 all season. In the defensive third, they’ve been very strong, keeping a clean sheet in three of their last five at Stadium of Light, conceding just two goals in the process. Their average of 0.71 goals against at home is the third best in the division.

Away-day problems for Tractor Boys

A quick glance at the home and away tables would suggest that Ipswich are League 1’s best away team. In terms of points accumulated, they are, though they’re seemingly becoming less and less effective away from the comforts of home.

Ipswich did recently beat Tranmere away from home, but they resumed losing ways recently, losing by a goal to nil at Rotherham. Paul Lambert’s men have now failed to win seven of their last eight travelling matches, four of which they’ve lost.

Goals have become a bit of a problem for Ipswich too, at both ends. They’ve kept a clean sheet in just one of their last eight on the road, while they’ve failed to score in three of those eight and have scored more than once in just one of their last five.

Black Cats to edge it

Sunderland haven’t been prolific in terms of wins at home of late, but their efforts suggests that they can edge it against Ipswich, who’ve struggled for clean sheets and who’ve scored in just one of their last three on the road. ‘Sunderland to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ stands out. Firstly, the goals haven’t flown at Stadium of Light this season, where more than three goals have been scored in just four out of 14. Add in that Sunderland have done a good job of restricting teams, alongside the fact that they boast encouraging shot numbers, especially against, and a low-scoring win starts to appeal, particularly given the recent lack of attacking potency shown by the visitors when playing away from home.
