Tottenham Hotspur vs Sunderland Predictions
- Tottenham have won only 11 of their last 38 Premier League games
- Sunderland have lost once in their last seven league games, keeping three clean sheets in four
- Spurs have lost four of their previous six home league matches
- Spurs have generated less than 1.0 xG in eight of their previous 10 league games
New Year, New Spurs?
Tottenham won only 11 of their 37 Premier League games in 2025, but they didn’t get the New Year off to the best start. Thomas Frank’s side drew 0-0 at his former side, Brentford, leaving Spurs rooted in the bottom half of the table.
If they’re going to have any prospect of improving in 2026, then their home form needs to pick up. Frank’s side have won only twice in nine league games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this term, suffering five defeats.
Sunderland’s AFCON absentees haven’t changed the Black Cats’ fortunes in the Premier League, as their 0-0 draw with Man City on Thursday left them with just one defeat in seven. Given their strong defensive foundations, they could trouble Spurs this weekend.
Side against vulnerable hosts
Since beating League One Doncaster in September, Tottenham have won only three times in nine home games across all competitions. Two of those were routine wins over poor Champions League sides in Slavia Prague and FC Copenhagen.
Frank’s side were beaten at home by Bournemouth in August, while they’ve lost to Aston Villa, Chelsea, Fulham, and Liverpool across their previous six home league games.
Sunderland have conceded only once in their last four league games, while they’ve impressed away from the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats have won at Chelsea, and they were unlucky not to take maximum points at Anfield too. The visitors have already kept clean sheets at Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Nottingham Forest, while Spurs have been held under 1.0 xG in eight of their previous 10 league games.
Inviting game for Brobbey
Tottenham have conceded nine goals from open play at home this season, which is the third-highest tally in the Premier League. That should offer plenty of space to Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey, who has caught the eye in recent weeks.
The striker has led the line well without scoring in Sunderland’s last four, but he has generated 1.1 xG across his last three games. The stiker has scored against Arsenal and Bournemouth at home this term, and this vulnerable Spurs defence could see him get off the mark away from home.
