Tip Reasoning

  • Mali have avoided defeat in nine of their last 11 AFCON matches.
  • Tunisia have failed to win seven of their last eight AFCON games (in 90 mins).
  • Mali and Tunisia drew 1-1 at the same stage in the 2019 tournament.

Magnificent Mali shouldn’t lose in Limbe

Mali have sent a strong group to Cameroon for this edition of AFCON and can underline their potential by avoiding defeat to the Group F seeds Tunisia in Limbe.

Both teams qualified with ease as Mali lost only once in their six Group J games while the 2004 runners-up went undefeated with five wins. But that was two years ago and the roles were reversed in recent World Cup qualifying games as the Eagles’ progress to the final knockout round – with six straight clean sheets – was the more impressive run on paper.

Mali must have one of the strongest groups of midfielders in the tournament with Yves Bissouma now back in the fold and the likes of Mohamed Camara – an ever-present in the Champions League with RB Salzburg – and RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara also fighting for game-time.

Midfield marvels can overpower Tunisia’s technicians

That could be where this group game could be won and lost with Tunisia full of talent and technique in the middle of the park, but lacking the leg power of Mali. The Eagles of Carthage have sent a relatively young squad to the tournament and may find themselves short on the kind of knowhow needed to handle an opponent as strong as the west Africans here.

A Mali win cannot be ruled out, but because opening group games like this are usually ones where teams fear to lose, we recommend a bet on the Eagles in the double chance market. Mohamed Magassouba’s men have lost only one  competitive senior match in the last two and a half years and only two of their last 11 AFCON games.

Tunisia’s record in this tournament is a bit chequered of late and with only one win in their last eight AFCON games, we are happy to take the odds of around 1/2 on Mali not to lose. A repeat of the 1-1 draw these sides played out at the same stage in 2019 looks like a good starting point in the correct score market.
