Take Turkey and Scotland to provide goals

Scotland face Turkey on Wednesday in an historic international game for the hosts as it is the first-ever to be held in the Kurdish stronghold of Diyarbakir. Turkish fans snapped up over 30,000 tickets for the game in less than an hour and if Stefan Kuntz’s squad show half their passion for the fixture Scotland will be in trouble.

Steve Clarke has been denied the services of any Celtic players for the game as the club are holding them back as it’s not being played in an official Fifa window while the Scotland boss has also been hit by late cry-offs.

Southampton striker Che Adams, Everton full-back Nathan Patterson and Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean have all pulled out, frustrating the Tartan Army chief. He wants to use the game to build up to the country’s European Championship qualifying campaign next year – just as Kuntz is hoping to do with the Crescent-Stars.

Kuntz’s side have been a potent force

Turkey have been quite a potent force since the German replaced Senol Gunes in September 2021. Kuntz’s side have scored 32 goals in 12 games and are yet to be blanked by any opponent on his watch.

They are at close to full-strength here with only a couple of Serie A-based defenders – Kaan Ayhaan and Merih Demiral – missing. Scotland could potentially take advantage of these absences in what is a relatively inexperienced group of defenders to score in what ought to be an open game.

There appears to be value in taking over 2.5 goals here as at least three goals were scored in five of Turkey’s last seven home games and also in two of Scotland’s last three away games of this type. Turkey have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven home friendlies, hence a 2-1 forecast for the result.
