Twente vs Maastricht Predictions
With Eerste Divisie leaders Almere City only managing a 2-2 draw at Volendam on Friday, Twente can go joint top of the table this Sunday with a win over MVV at De Grolsch Veste. Marino Pusic’s side are odds-on favourites to oblige, but their task may not be so straightforward against a Maastricht team who are unbeaten on the road so far this term.
Twente looked to register their sixth league win of the campaign at FC Eindhoven last week following Altor Cantalapiedra’s goal just before the hour mark, but they were dramatically pegged back late on in stoppage time for a 1-1 draw,
The result prevented Twente recording their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions; however they still go into this week’s round of games in decent nick.
Marino Pusic’s side are 3rd in the table with 17 points on the board from eight matches, leaving them three points behind leaders Almere City and level with Go Ahead Eagles and Sparta Rotterdam.
The Enschede outfit have won three of their four home games thus far (their copybook blotted by a surprise 1-2 reversal against Oss on match day four) and are expected to be fairly dominant at De Grolsch Veste this season as they bid to return to Eredivisie at the first time of asking.
On paper this seems like a penalty kick for Twente with MVV winless in their last three outings and down to 13th in the table, but Ron Elsen’s team have been useful on the road in their four away trips to date.
Maastricht have accrued eight points from a possible 12 on their travels, beating Telstar and FC Eindhoven 0-1 and drawing with Jong Utrecht (0-0) and Almere City (2-2).
That’s form worthy of a side you’d expect to see nearer the head of affairs, and it’s quite clear that MVV are happier away from De Geusselt at present, especially after losing 0-3 to Den Bosch in front of their own supporters on match day eight.
This will be their biggest away test of the campaign though and a real challenge playing at such a daunting venue. A case can definitely be made for MVV in terms of picking something up here, but we think the hosts will be too strong over the course of 90 minutes.
The odds for a Twente victory alone are pretty short despite the Enschede outfit being the likely winners this Sunday, so we’re throwing in both teams to score as well to enhance their price.
Both teams have scored in all four of Twente’s home fixtures this season whilst MVV have netted in three of their four away assignments. With only one clean sheet from nine in all competitions, this Twente defence can definitely be got at but we envisage Pusic’s side coming through this 2-1, to also maintain their scoring rate of two goals per game.
