UCD won’t get a pass from Bohs

UCD have been failing their exams recently and there’s no reason to expect that to change when they face Bohemians in a Dublin derby this Thursday. The Students haven’t been able to replace the firepower of Irish Under-21 forwards Liam Kerrigan and Colm Whelan – lost to Italian football and a season-ending ruptured cruciate ligament respectively.

Together, they seemed capable of causing havoc against any defence in the top-flight, but without them UCD seem to be sitting ducks. The Students have lost five of their six games played since Whelan’s injury and failed to score in four of them.

Hence, there’s no interest here in backing them – even as a 5/1 home proposition – to take all three points on Thursday. Bohemians may be on a bad away run, losing each of their last three away from Dalymount Park, but all three were against teams in the top four and the last was a narrow 1-0 defeat to champions and runaway leaders Shamrock Rovers.

Opposing goals is the play

The visitors could justify their short odds for victory at UCD Bowl, but putting some money behind fewer than three goals being scored on the day could well elicit a greater return.

Overs is the favourite here, despite seven of the last ten UCD home games and an identical 70% of Bohemians’ away contests having finished under the 2.5 goal line. Given the hosts are in a real goalscoring rut, it may come down to whether Bohs can strike three times to scupper an unders bet.

Keith Long’s side have hit more then two goals in a league game just twice from 21 attempts this term, so it looks a risk worth taking. A 2-0 away win appears the obvious choice in correct score betting as UCD have shipped at an average rate of 1.86 goals per game across their last seven home league matches.
