Salernitana set to struggle?

While Salernitana kept the scoreline respectable against Roma on matchday one, falling to a 1-0 defeat on home soil, Jose Mourinho’s Giallorossi spurned several chances to kill the match, and Davide Nicola’s men look set for another fierce battle against the drop after losing key players this summer. A trip to Udinese, who thrashed them 4-0 on the final day last term, appears to offer little solace for the Granata.

While Udinese have changed coach since that win, bringing in former defender Andrea Sottil as Gabriele Cioffi’s replacement, their attacking verve remained on display in a 4-2 opening-day loss at Milan last week, during which the Zebrette gave as good as they got. Only five Serie A teams scored more than the 31 home goals managed by Udinese last term, and including friendlies, they’ve won three in a row on home soil.

Although Salernitana ensured a miraculous escape at the last in 2021-22, the poor form of their rivals had a large part to play as they went three without victory to finish the Serie A campaign. Nicola’s men have now gone five competitive games without a win, losing the last three, including a comprehensive 2-0 loss to Serie B side Parma in the Coppa Italia. Their record of 11 defeats on the road last term, meanwhile, was worse than all but two teams in the Italian top flight.

With Salernitana in for another long Serie A campaign, Udinese should be expected to follow up on their final-day victory over the Granata with another win on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Salternitana have failed to score in their last three competitive outings, making a 2-0 home win a decent correct score prediction.
