Many onlookers were unsure what to expect from Atalanta this campaign after Gian Piero Gasperini u-turned on his future to begin a seventh season at the helm in Bergamo, but they impressed during a 1-1 draw with champions Milan last time out after winning their opener. Sunday’s trip to Verona, against whom they won one and lost one las season, will represent another test of their European credentials.

Atalanta produced a polished performance against Milan to move onto four points, with the Rossoneri requiring a stunning equaliser from Ismael Bennacer. Atalanta are looking to protect a decent away record, having won three of their last four on the road, the exception being a trip to San Siro at the end of last season. However, their relative solidity this campaign is uncharacteristic – six of Atalanta’s last nine games have seen both teams score, and more fireworks may be expected on Sunday.

Verona, meanwhile, have struggled, taking one point from their first two league games and crashing to an early Coppa Italia exit. While Gabrielle Cioffi was expected to preserve their attacking style, a record of 10 goals conceded in those three matches – nine of them in two home games – will not please the former Udinese man. However, Verona’s ability to find the net remains undiminished – 12 of their last 14 games have seen both teams score, including all three this season.

Last season’s two Serie A fixtures between Verona and Atalanta each ended as 2-1 home wins, and while Atalanta are favourites to reverse that trend this time around, another match featuring goals at both ends looks likely.
