Werder Bremen vs Stuttgart Predictions
Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart are two of the Bundesliga’s longest-serving clubs and share nine Bundesliga titles between them. Recent fortunes have not favoured either Bremen or Stuttgart, however. Werder Bremen travelled to North-German rivals last Friday and left with nothing in a 2-1 defeat to Hamburger SV – their fourth defeat in six matches in the league (W1 D1 L4). Bremen stand in the relegation play-off spot, 16th in the Bundesliga, and just two points below VfB Stuttgart, who haven’t been themselves either in recent weeks.
VfB Stuttgart were defeated 3-0 last time out at home to Borussia Dortmund, which was also their fourth defeat in six matches (D2 L4) – their fixtures have, however, been much more difficult, facing off against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen within their last five. No team is in worse league form than VfB Stuttgart and a defeat on Monday would see them replace Werder Bremen in the relegation zone.
New records, both good and bad, are set in this match as Werder Bremen face Stuttgart for a 100th time in the top flight (only the fifth pair to reach this landmark). Bremen and Stuttgart have both struggled throughout the whole season defensively and share club records for most goals conceded in a season – 63 goals each in 31 matches, an average of two goals conceded per game. Werder Bremen’s total of 31 points from the same number of appearances is also their worst-ever record in the Bundesliga.
With both teams looking so out-of-form it’s difficult to really see who is the favourite, but with both teams playing a tactically aggressive style of football combined with regularly error prone defenses (Werder Bremen are yet to keep a clean sheet this season), we should be able to expect a few goals. Veteran striker Claudio Pizzaro should make his 250th appearance for Werder Bremen and as club-record top scorer (102 goals) he’ll look to increase his tally. Combining that analysis with the statistics below, we expect both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 8/13 to be a safe bet and score of 2-2 draw at 9/1 to be top value.
