Western United vs Sydney FC Predictions
Western United entered their maiden A-League season full of confidence, winning three of their opening five matches and sitting within the top three in the league. Their recent form has seen them drop off from the leading pack, with losses against Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners leaving them six points off the top. Things don’t get any easier for the side either with the visit of current champions, Sydney FC.
Expectations are always high for Sydney and, as they invariably do, they’ve lived up to these so far with five wins from six. Their sole loss came as a result of a controversial goal line decision and they’ll be full of confidence after three convincing wins in the past three weeks, putting them just a point behind Melbourne City at the top of the table.
This is the first meeting between these two sides so there’s no history to speak of but this should be an interesting game as Western United try to get back to winning ways and Sydney look to maintain pace at the top of the league. Sydney have scored 14 goals in six games so far and have looked very dangerous in the final third whilst Western United have averaged 1.1 goals scored and conceded this season.
With their superior form and ability in front of goal, we’re backing Sydney to pick up the win this weekend. The visitors have won two of their three away games this season, averaging two goals a game in those fixtures and striker, Adam Le Fondre, already has five goals this campaign. Western United look a little lacking in confidence and, whilst they’ll need to pick up a result soon, we don’t think its coming here.
We think Sydney FC have enough in attack to maintain their two goal a game average and their defence is strong too with an average of just 1.1 goals conceded per game. With that in mind we’re predicting a 2-0 win for the visitors as they continue to pile the pressure on Western United and leapfrog Melbourne City at the top of the A-League table.
