Wigan vs Newcastle Predictions

The Championship reached the 20 game mark at the weekend and by this stage in the season, it increasingly begins to feel as though the league table offers a pretty fair reflection on the qualities of the respective sides. With Newcastle top and Wigan down in 23rd, it’s pretty clear there is a real gulf in class here. There were 2 divisions between these sides last term and it wouldn’t be a great surprise if that was to be the case again next season. Certainly an away win looks the most likely outcome here.

Newcastle have suffered a few poor results in recent weeks but got back on track with a convincing 4-0 win at the weekend against Birmingham. Dwight Gayle was again their hero, netting a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to 16 goals. Rafa Benitez has employed a rotation system this season, particularly when they’ve played in midweek, but Gayle’s performances are going to make it very tough for him to opt for Mitrovic here and backing Gayle to score anytime at Evens looks to offer a solid bet.

On the road, the Magpies have been very good this term. They average 2.2 points per game on the road, easily the best away record in the league and have won 70% of their away fixtures. 6 of their 7 away wins have been to nil and they’ve conceded just 0.50 goals per game on their travels which is excellent.

Given that Wigan are going to have a very hard time breaching their defence here, particularly when you look at their goal-scoring stats. The Latics have managed just 0.8 goals per game this season. They have the worst goal-scoring in the league and they’ve actually scored more goals away than at home. At the DW Stadium they’ve failed to score in an alarming 67% of their matches and average just 0.67 goals scored per game.

Given all those stats and the clear gulf in quality between the teams, backing Newcastle to win to nil at 15/8 looks like a cracking bet.
