Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

With an extra knockout round at this World Cup, the second round gets underway around 15 hours after the group stage wraps up.

The tournament’s first-ever last 32 match is between co-hosts Canada and South Africa, although the clash is taking place in Los Angeles.

I’ve picked out 17/2, 2/1, and 11/10 tips for the game in our South Africa vs Canada predictions, and I’ve put together four player props to make this 32/1 Ultimate Bet Builder.

South Africa vs Canada Ultimate Bet Builder

Cyle Larin to score

Larin didn’t start in Canada’s opening game, but he came off the bench to bail them out against Bosnia. The striker recorded a shot on target in all three group games, continuing his fine form from the end of the club campaign.

Larin spent the second half of the season on loan at Southampton, scoring eight times in 16 appearances in the Championship. He’s seemingly carried that form into this tournament, and he can add his third goal of the World Cup against a South Africa side that has conceded in 10 of their last 12 games.

Evidence Makgopa 1+ shot on target (including woodwork)

Like Larin, Makgopa has forced his way into the South Africa side as the tournament has progressed. After a 15-minute cameo against Mexico, he had two shots on target off the bench against Czechia. That earned him a start against South Korea, where he also registered a shot on target.

Makgopa had five shots across 62 minutes at the Africa Cup of Nations last winter. At the 2023 edition of the tournament, he was a key member of South Africa’s run to the semis, recording a shot on target in five of his seven appearances. He has a proven track record in tournament football, and he’s worth backing for a shot on target in LA.

Alistair Johnston to create two or more shots

Johnston leads all Canadian players with nine chances created at this tournament. He finished with two in the clash with Switzerland to finish the group stage, and Canada are expected to create more chances against South Africa.

Johnston doesn’t have an assist at this tournament so far, but he does lead all Canadians with 1.8 Expected Assists. While the co-hosts’ finishing can be questionable at times, Johnston should continue to tee up his teammates.

Khuliso Mudau to be carded

On the other flank, South Africa’s right-back Mudau is set for a tricky afternoon in Los Angeles. He was booked eight times in 21 games in South Africa’s top division last season, and no South Africa player had more fouls than Mudau across the group stage.

Richie Laryea will push forward from left-back for Canada, supporting Ali Ahmed. Between them, those two players drew 12 fouls in the group stage. They can trouble Mudau, so back the defender to be booked.
