Championship Anytime Scorer Predictions: Five Picks Including 12/5 Top Scorer!

Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

The first midweek round of the new EFL Championship season is upon us, which marks the fourth round of games for the second-tier clubs. The picture is becoming slightly clearer at the top and bottom, while many of this season’s sharpshooters have already emerged. That was crucial, given that most of last season’s golden boot contenders have moved on up to the Premier League.

Wednesday night brings five Championship forwards who will be aiming to be among the top scorers this season. Here we’re analysing their scoring chances in this latest round of games as we try and find a few solid anytime goalscorer bets for the midweek fixtures. See our verdict on who will deliver for their side below.

Don’t forget to see our Championship Golden Boot Predictions for our outright top scorer tips.

Lyle Taylor – Charlton vs Nottingham Forest

Charlton forward Taylor has scored in every game in the second tier this season, with his form after moving out of League One impressing us. The Charlton penalty taker could get another opportunity from the spot this week, while the striker has proven himself to be more than just a spot-kick taker. Taylor is a natural finisher with the confidence to boot, helping his side to a high scoring start to life in the second tier.

With Forest looking shaky in defence we are anticipating more chances for Taylor this week. The club don’t have much going for them at the back, while they’ve managed one clean sheet on the road since the start of March. That has us tipping Taylor to score in our Charlton vs Nottingham Forest Predictions, with the forward hitting nine goals in his previous 10 league games. He heads into this clash priced at 8/5 with Betfair to score at the Valley.

Patrick Bamford – Leeds vs Brentford

Leeds finished last term as the more creative side in the league, with Expected Goals statistics suggesting that they were a striker away from promotion. Those same statistics also suggested that their answer was already at the club. Patrick Bamford spent his fair share of time injured but he had the best xG per 90 minutes across the division.

Leeds have kept up the same kind of form, with their 3.6 xG against Wigan at the weekend shows their quality. They had Bamford to thank as he scored twice in the 2-0 success, his second and third goals of the season. We expect him to continue his fine start to the new campaign, while we’re backing success for the hosts in our Leeds vs Brentford Predictions.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – Fulham vs Millwall

The leading frontman in the Championship is set to play a key role in Fulham’s promotion bid. The Cottagers have won back to back games with Mitrovic scoring in each. He is complemented with some strong options in midfield, which is likely to add to his great scoring record at this level. Having found the net 14 times in 21 starts for the club in the second tier. That excellent form has inspired us to back him to score this week in our Fulham vs Millwall Predictions.

The hosts should be confident following their terrific Championship home record. Mitrovic has played a big part in that, scoring seven times in their last nine at home at this level. With Millwall conceding far too many in their trips to the top sides last season we think Mitrovic is a good option to score anytime. Given his excellent form, his anytime scorer price of evens with Betfair seems like decent value.

Borja Baston – QPR vs Swansea

The surprise man of the Swansea’s set up is their one-time record signing Borja Baston. The £15.5million signing certainly seems to be worth every penny now, but that is coming two and a half years after he was essentially banished from the club after a poor start. Now Baston has hit three goals in three games and he is unlikely to stop there.

The Swans are acing an open QPR side, which has led to us fancying goals in our QPR vs Swansea Predictions. The visitors have conceded 19 times across their last 11 home matches, which should allow Baston chances. He’s leading the line in an attack-minded side while this is far from the hardest trip the Swans will face this term. Given his early-season form, we’re backing the joint top scorer to notch here at 12/5 with BetVictor.

George Puscas – West Brom vs Reading

Our final pick for this midweek action is Reading’s new man George Puscas. The Romanian arrived with a famous name to mark him out, while he impressed at the Under 21 Euros this summer. He scored four times in four games as his side made it to the semis. He scored 11 times in that campaign overall, while his start at Reading has been excellent. His introduction to English football has brought three goals in two games.

Puscas looks a cut above at this level, with great variation in his play. He can deal with chances played into feet, while he has the power to dribble at defences and carve out a shot. He should be able to take advantage of a West Brom defence which has failed to keep a clean sheet all season. Our West Brom vs Reading Predictions point towards a game with goals on each side, while we’re backing Puscas to be the man to deliver for the Royals this week. He can be found at 9/4 with BetVictor to score at the Hawthorns.
