The first piece of European silverware will be claimed this week as Sevilla and Roma face off in the Europa League final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

I’ve covered the game in detail in our dedicated Match Predictions section and now with Wednesday’s showpiece in mind, I’ve looked into every Europa League Final since the turn of the millennium to identify any trends we might use in our betting.

There is another angle to explore here as well, as this is the seventh final in the last 18 to involve Sevilla so I’ll be considering their previous outings as well.

Sevilla’s record speaks for itself

Sevilla won their first Europa League title in 2006, beating Middlesbrough in the final, and have reached and won five further finals since that triumph.

In contrast, this is Roma’s second appearance in the showpiece and their first since it was rebranded as the Europa League. Their one and only appearance came back in 1991, where they lost out to Italian rivals Inter Milan.

Spanish teams have dominated this competition both historically and since the turn of the millennium. There have been 13 champions from Spain, more than any other country, and a La Liga side has won the Europa League in 11 of the last 23 years, while the last of the nine Italian sides to life the trophy was Parma in 1998 and only Inter Milan have reached the final since then, losing out in 2020 to Sevilla.

The trends here clearly point to one outcome – Sevilla to lift the trophy, which pays out at 4/5.

Europa League final goal trends

Finals are sometimes cagey affairs but we could be in line for entertainment on Wednesday if recent history is anything to go by.

Both teams have scored in the last two finals and in 14 of the last 23, while there have been just two 0-0 draws during that time.

Both teams to score is priced at 21/20, while over 2.5 goals has landed in 13 of the last 23 finals and is on offer at 13/8.

From a Sevilla perspective, both teams have scored in four of their six final appearances and over 2.5 goals has been a winning bet in five – but they have been involved in a bore draw as their 2014 success against Benfica came via a penalty shootout after a goalless 90 minutes and extra time.
