After aggregate wins for favourites Barcelona, Sevilla and RB Leipzig on Thursday evening, the Europa League group winners entered the knockout rounds on Friday as the Europa League Round of 16 draw took place in Switzerland.

Here, I’ve rounded up all you need to know about the draw and how it has affected the betting markets:

Europa League Round of 16 draw

  • Rangers vs Red Star Belgrade
  • Braga vs Monaco
  • Porto vs Lyon
  • Atalanta vs Bayer Leverkusen
  • Sevilla vs West Ham
  • Barcelona vs Galatasaray
  • RB Leipzig vs Spartak Moscow
  • Real Betis vs Eintracht Frankfurt

How has the draw affected the betting markets?

Favourites for the trophy even before the draw was made, Barcelona have been brought in from 7/2 to 3/1 after being handed a rather favourable fixture against struggling Turkish outfit Galatasaray, who have understandably lengthened all the way out to 100/1 from a pre-draw price of 66/1.

Sevilla, our Europa League outright selection, have drawn a tough West Ham side and it is evident just how finely poised this tie is. Sevilla are out to 11/2 from 5/1 and West Ham out to 14/1 from 12/1, with the two sides 7/10 and 21/20 to qualify for the quarter finals respectively.

RB Leipzig are the big winners from proceedings in Switzerland, though. Not only have they drawn a relatively weak side in Spartak Moscow, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine means Spartak can’t even play the home leg in Russia. The result is Leipzig being backed in to 11/2 from a pre-draw 7/1, while Spartak Moscow are out to 100/1.

Porto’s tough test against Lyon has seen both teams lengthen in price, with the sides now 14/1 and 16/1 respectively, while Rangers are all the way in to 16/1 from 20/1 after a stunning win over Borussia Dortmund earned them a last-16 tie with 100/1 outsiders Red Star Belgrade, down from this morning’s 16/1.

Bayer Leverkusen are the only other movers in the market, lengthening from 16/1 to 20/1 after drawing 8/1 Atalanta, who remain unchanged. Real Betis, Monaco, Eintracht Frankfurt and Braga are the other unchanged competitors.

While the draw has thrown up some very interesting ties, it hasn’t changed my opinion that Sevilla will win, while our Europa League trends outsider pick Porto still look good value despite a tough draw.
