Memorial Tournament & Scandinavian Mixed tips with 545/1 double

It’s signature event time on the PGA Tour with The Memorial Tournament taking place at Muirfield Village and defending champion Victor Hovland, making his first appearance since the US PGA Championship, will be eager to fine-tune his game ahead of next week’s US Open at Pinehurst.

Over on the DP World Tour, Englishman Dale Whitnell is aiming to retain his Scandinavian Mixed title at Vasatorp Golf Club, an innovative event with 78 men and 78 women competing for one trophy.

Racing Post golf expert James Mason has picked out a winner for each event and together they combine for a huge 545/1 double, which should be backed as an each-way bet.

The Memorial Tournament

With the Arnold Palmer, Players Championship and Masters titles to his name this season, world number one Scottie Scheffler remains the player to beat and he is the favourite to chalk up another win ahead of the third Major.

Reigning US PGA champion Xander Schauffele is making his first appearance since that Valhalla triumph and is fancied to go well, while Rory McIlroy will be hoping to build from last week’s tied-fourth finish at the Canadian Open.

It’s a stacked field at Muirfield Village Golf Club and while those three market leaders will attract plenty of support, course specialist Patrick Cantlay looks a solid shout at 25/1 and he could end a near two-year wait for his ninth PGA Tour title.

The American won here in 2019 and 2021, fending off Adam Scott by two strokes before edging out Collin Morikawa in a playoff, while his other results at this venue read 35th, fourth, seventh (Workday Charity Open), 32nd, third and 30th.

Cantlay’s best golf this season has come at the signature events, having recorded top-five finishes at the RBC Heritage and Genesis Invitational, and the fact a hot putter has been key to Memorial success over the years only increases the world number nine’s chances of a third title.

Scandinavian Mixed

The fourth instalment of the Scandinavian Mixed promises to be another intriguing one at Vasatorp Golf Club, a course that will be playing around 600 yards shorter than last week’s Green Eagle at the European Open.

Brute strength will be replaced by precise approach play and one player who fits into that mould nicely is 20/1 chance Alexander Bjork, who should benefit from this drop in class from the PGA events he has been contesting.

The 33-year-old Swede has struggled to make his mark on the US circuit although he was tied-39th at the US PGA Championship on his last outing, form which bodes well ahead of his return to his homeland.

Bjork was one of the best from tee-to-green on the DP World Tour last season, ranking fourth in driving accuracy and 11th in greens in regulation, and he can show his class in this weaker field.
