Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-min shared the Premier League Golden Boot last season after netting 23 goals apiece but the arrival of a certain Erling Braut Haaland has thrown the top goalscorer market into disarray ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Haaland, who signed for Manchester City, has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite owing to an unparalleled scoring record in his young career, with some 114 goals in 111 appearances since his breakthrough at Red Bull Salzburg.

Following on from our Premier League outright winner & top 4 predictions and our Premier League relegation predictions, I take a look at the best bets for the Golden Boot.

Premier League 2022/23 top goalscorer predictions

Mohamed Salah top goalscorer at 9/2

Erling Haaland is an unknown quantity, coming over from the Bundesliga and into a team that sets up completely differently to the high-tempo RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund. He looks too short at 3/1, especially when you consider his competition.

Mohamed Salah has been an absolute revelation for Liverpool since joining in 2017/18, scoring 118 Premier League goals in just 180 appearances.

He is showing no signs of slowing down, either, notching 23 times last season for his second-best goalscoring season in the top flight. That was his third Golden Boot award in five seasons, with only Thierry Henry winning the award more times than him.

It could have been even better, too. He missed a month of action at the African Cup of Nations and scored just six goals in the 15 league games after the tournament. This season, rather than contending with even more fixtures, Salah will get a six-week break while many of his competitors head to Qatar for the World Cup.

It’s hard to back against the Egyptian talisman and I make him favourite once again, while you can also double him up with our outright winner prediction at 12/1.

Son Heung-min top goalscorer (eachway) at 12/1

With bet365 paying out four places in the eachway market, it’s certainly worth considering backing multiple runners in the top goalscorer race and last season’s joint-winner Son Heung-min is another standout choice.

His 23-goal season was his best ever in the Premier League but he has always been a prolific scorer, with all six of his top-flight seasons in North London yielding at least ten goals.

His last two seasons have seen him score 40 goals in 72 appearances and he scored 19 of his goals last season in the 26 games after Antonio Conte arrived at the club.

Raheem Sterling top goalscorer (eachway) at 33/1

If you’re looking for an underdog to come into contention at the top of the scoring charts you could do a lot worse than backing Raheem Sterling.

The new Chelsea signing will be a key component in Thomas Tuchel’s attack after Romelu Lukaku’s departure and if often unfairly criticised considering his excellent record.

He has scored at least ten goals in each of his last five Premier League seasons and had a three-season run in which he scored 18, 17 and 20 top-flight goals.

The latest of these was a 20-goal haul in 2019/20 and if he can rediscover that form he could be a real threat at the top of the charts.

Premier League 2022/23 most assists predictions

Trent Alexander-Arnold most assists at 9/1

Kevin De Bruyne is huge favourite for this market but the Belgian playmaker’s injury record is always a concern. He has started 25 of fewer games in each of the last two seasons and at double the odds Trent Alexander-Arnold is a much more attractive proposition.

The Liverpool right-back has laid on 44 assists across the last four seasons and has come runner up in this market in two of the last three campaigns, only providing fewer than ten goals in one of these four terms.

He was actually top of the standings in Expected Assists (xA) last season and only finished one behind teammate Mohamed Salah, so he is definitely worth a bet.

Andrew Robertson most assists (eachway) at 20/1

Sticking with the Liverpool theme, Andrew Robertson often gets overlooked due to the hype surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold but the Scotland international is almost as prolific a creator as his teammate.

In fact, over the last four seasons he has only provided four fewer assists than Alexander-Arnold and has been in the top five in this market in three of the last four seasons and third in the standings in two of those.

At these odds, an eachway punt paying out three places is very much worth considering.
