Accrington Stanley vs Stevenage Predictions

Accrington Stanley go into the game knowing a victory will see them promoted to the third tier of English football for the first time since they were reformed in 1968. For those that don’t know the history of the club that would not die, they were formed in 1891 before going bust in 1966. The club was then reformed in 1968 and hasn’t looked back since.

With a budget much lower than most of the division, Stanley are one of the suprise packages of the season. The form of star players Billy Kee and Josh Windass have catapulted the lancastrians into a position where they are within touching distance of getting promotion to League One. John Coleman’s charges are the form team in the division but will know they have to win as a draw may see them drop into the playoff places due to the superior goal difference of rivals Oxford and Bristol Rovers.

Stevenage grabbed the headlines last summer when they brought in former England striker Teddy Sheringham to be their manager. After struggling towards the bottom of the league for much of the season Sheringham was relieved of his duties in February. Borough then appointed Darren Sarll as caretaker manager and he has lead them away from trouble to secure their league status for another season.

Accrington know they have to go and win this match to secure their promotion, so Coleman will likely want his side to push for at least a two goal cushion to guard against any last minute nerves. Although Stevenage’s form has picked up in recent weeks their season is all but over, so I think an Accrington win with -1 handicap is where the value is in this fixture.
