Airdrieonians vs Motherwell Predictions
- Motherwell have two wins from as many games in the Scottish League Cup.
- Airdrieonians haven’t faced a team from a higher division yet in the competition.
- Motherwell were stronger on their travels last season.
Motherwell a step too far for the Diamonds
Motherwell fought back from two goals down to beat Queen of the South 3-2 in the Scottish League Cup at the weekend and now head to League One Airdrieonians on Wednesday, in what looks a more straightforward assignment for Graham Alexander’s side.
Queen of the South scored two goals in the final five minutes of the first half but three second half goals from Motherwell turned that tie around and they now sit at the top of Group F with six points from two games.
Airdrieonians have made a solid start to the competition with three points from two games so far. The Diamonds lost on penalties to Annan in their opening fixture after a 1-1 draw then beat Queen’s Park in a shootout after a goalless stalemate.
However, Premiership opposition may be a step-up in class too far for Airdrieonians and the Steelmen should head into this fixture in confident mood after their exceptional second half display against Queen of the South.
Motherwell were stronger on their travels than they were at their Fir Park home last season, picking up 24 points away and 20 at home, and the very early signs suggest that pattern could continue this year after their initial struggles against Queen of the South.
The Well should be able to win this fixture fairly comfortably as Airdrieonians are yet to face a side from the top two divisions in this competition. Motherwell managed a clean sheet at Queen’s Park in their first game in the League Cup and another shut-out could be on the cards on Wednesday, with 2-0 having some appeal in the correct score market.
