Anorthosis Famagusta vs Gent Predictions

  • Despite winning three of their four games, Gent have only scored five goals in the group stages
  • Since 1999/2000, Anorthosis have won just one game beyond the qualifying stages of European competition
  • Gent won the reverse fixture in Belgium 2-0

Anorthosis’ European Troubles

Despite regularly qualifying for European football by virtue of their performances domestically, the Cypriots are struggling to make the step up when it comes to continental competitions.

They have lost two and drawn two of their four group games this season, collecting their points in a pair of 2-2 stalemates with Flora Tallinn.

The four goals they have scored against Tallinn are in fact the only time they have hit the back of the net in the group stages of the Conference League and it is difficult to see how they will break down a resilient Gent defence who often keep things tight.

History is very much against Anorthosis from picking up a result in this one, and I predict they will end on the wrong side of a narrow defeat.

Gent Strolling Towards The Knock-Out Stages

Gent have already qualified for the first knock-out round of the Conference League, but they will be keen to grab top spot in the group, and a fourth win in five group games will go along way towards securing first place.

Despite winning so many games, hitting the back of the net for them has been a problem in Europe. Although they have scored in each of their four games, they have a total of just five goals so far, meaning they are relying on their defence to keep things tight to grab a result.

That, though, is what I expect them to do in this fixture. Both their away games have ended in a 1-0 success, while they have kept clean sheets in four of their last eight on the road in all competitions, conceding just four goals in the process.

It is unlikely to be a free-flowing goalfest, but Gent have the quality to see this one through, with a predicted 1-0 victory.
