Tip Reasoning

  • Stoke City are conceding an average of 1.1 goals per home game and don’t have anything to play for.
  • Sheffield United are in the playoff picture but are conceding an average of 1.35 goals per away game.
  • Both teams have scored in five of the last six meetings.

Stoke City’s fragile backline

The ‘Potters’ pulled themselves out of a rut when they won 2-0 against Millwall last time out. That ended a run of nine games without a win. That scoreline wasn’t too surprising considering that now, six of their seven home win have come via that exact score. Despite that win, a spot in the playoffs looks as though it’s out of reach and a spot in midtable will have to suffice. The damage has already been done and their leaky defence has been the main culprit. The win over Millwall was their first clean sheet since February and they’ve failed to win 10 of the 22 games where they’ve opened the scoring, highlighting their defensive fragility.

A managerial change during the season is always a bit of a coin-flip, but Sheffield United will be happy with how things have panned out since Paul Heckingbottom took the reigns. He’s turned Bramall Lane into a bit of a fortress but it’s their away form that needs improvement – winning just twice across their last nine away matches. The ‘Blades’ have managed to keep three clean sheets across their last six road matches so if they can be more efficient up top, they might just have a winning formula.

Win on the cards for Sheffield United

The visitors have shown lately that they’re a hard team to break down and they just need to find a bit of potency up top. Stoke City, whilst coming off the back of an important win, look like a side who will concede a number of times throughout any given match and we’re siding with Sheffield United to remain watertight whilst taking a couple of chances that will inevitably be presented to them against this ‘Potters’ backline.
