Reason For Athletic Bilbao vs Osasuna Predictions

  • All but two of Athletic Bilbao’s 11 home league games this term have featured fewer than 2.5 goals.
  • Fewer than 2.5 goals have been scored in eight of Osasuna’s 11 La Liga matches on the road.
  • Athletic Bilbao have a strong overall record at San Mames this season, winning six and drawing three of their 11 matches.
  • Osasuna, meanwhile, travel to San Mames having won just one of their last ten away league fixtures.

Derby defeat extends winless run for Bilbao

Despite their impressive Copa Del Rey progress including a 1-0 victory against Barcelona in the Quarter-Finals, it’s been a rough couple of months in La Liga for Athletic Bilbao, who travelled to Reale Arena for last weekend’s Basque derby without a win in seven.

Inaki Williams fired Los Leones back on terms with 20 minutes to go after Portu opened the scoring for Sociedad just after the hour mark, but the points would eventually go to Txuri-urdinak following Alexander Isak’s late winner.

A disappointing afternoon for Bilbao was compounded when Iker Muniain saw a straight red for his horror challenge on Mikel Oyarzabal, and the result means that Gaizka Garitano’s men remain ninth in the table and eight points behind the top four.

A return to San Mames this weekend provides Bilbao with a decent opportunity to regain the winning thread in the league, as they have a decent record overall at home this term (W6, D2 and L3), despite failing to win their last three.

A 1-0 midweek home success over Granada in first leg of the Copa Del Rey Semi-Finals provided Los Leones with a much needed shot in the arm, and they will be hopeful that they can complete a league double over Osasuna after beating Los Rojillos 1-2 at El Sadar in November’s reverse fixture.

Osasuna beginning to fade

Osasuna should have done enough already to preserve their top flight status following their bloodless Segunda title success last term, but their promising campaign has fizzled out quite rapidly over the past couple of months.

Los Rojillos have won just one of their last eight La Liga matches (W1, D3 and L4) after last weekend’s 1-4 hammering at home to Real Madrid, and Jagoba Arrasate’s men travel to San Mames on the back of just one win in their last ten league games on the road (W1, D5 and L4).

Osasuna’s two away victories this season have come against the current bottom two in the shape of Leganes (0-1) and Espanyol (2-4), so there’s little in their favour going into Matchday 24, even considering Bilbao’s recent difficulties in getting over the winning line.

Another low scoring affair likely at San Mames

We wouldn’t deter punters from backing Bilbao at evens this weekend, although their winless run is concerning enough to look elsewhere for a wager.

And under 2.5 goals definitely stands out as the safe option here, considering all but two of Bilbao home league games this season have produced fewer than 2.5 goals, including their last four outings at San Mames.

Additionally, eight of Osasuna’s 11 away matches have also generated fewer than 2.5 goals, so the stats reinforce our thoughts that this will a scrappy contest as both sides look to rebuild some confidence.

All but one of Bilbao’s six home wins this season have been secured without the concession of a goal, so we’re predicting a 1-0 correct score in anticipation of that trend continuing this Sunday.
