Viennese to waltz through first leg

Austria Vienna enter the UEFA Europa Conference League at the second qualifying round stage this week and they should have far too much for Icelandic Minnows Breidablik in Thursday’s first leg at Generali Arena.

Die Veilchen have been regular fixtures in the Europa League group phase throughout the last decade or so, but a spot in this competition was all they could achieve last term after finishing eighth in the Bundesliga.

They had to win the Relegation Round and then beat fifth placed Wolfsberger in a Play-Off to make it, meaning they’ve won five of their last six competitive games – albeit with the last of those coming way back in May.

Unlike Austria Vienna who being their new domestic campaign at the weekend, Breidablik are already in the middle of their season and are currently third in Iceland. A fourth place finish last term earned them a place in the competition, and they negotiated their way past Luxembourgers Racing 5-2 on aggregate in the previous round.

A lot of these early season European games are difficult to assess, but Austria Vienna are tipped to come through this first leg with a healthy advantage. They play in a far superior domestic league and will be hoping to pick up from where they left off at the end of 2020/21. The visitors will do their all to eek out some kind of result, but the Viennese are backed to cover a two goal handicap.
