Reason For Barnsley vs Blackburn Rovers Predictions

  • Blackburn have lost 18 of their last 30 away games, including each of their last two.
  • Barnsley’s restart and run-in hopes are boosted by possessing the youngest squad in the division.
  • The hosts have conceded just 29 times in 23 games under their Gerhard Struber. They have the 13th best record in the division since he took charge.
  • Barnsley have conceded in two of their last seven, while Blackburn have one clean sheet in 14 against the Tykes.

Barnsley climbing

Barnsley picked up another point at the weekend, which continues their push for safety. They are making stable progress under Gerhard Struber, despite sitting bottom of the table. However, they’re only four-points shy of safety, while their position in the table is largely down to their struggles in the early months of the campaign.

Since Struber took charge in November, Barnsley have the 13th best record from that point onwards. The 16 games before that account for almost half of their 19 defeats this term and just one of their nine victories. That form should worry Blackburn, while our predictions see us side against the visitors who have hit a tricky point in their campaign.

Can Rovers return to form?

Blackburn have lost two of their last three Championship games (W1), having lost just one of their previous 10 in the competition. They are a side who go on stretches of good and bad results, so it could be a while before they pick up and get back on track. Their playoff ambitions have taken a hit following the weekend’s results, while they could be set for another tough run which would push them away from the top six.

Blackburn have lost 18 of their previous 30 away games in all competitions, including back to back losses to Wigan and Derby ahead of this one. They lacked quality in that loss to Wigan, being kept quiet for long periods of the game before the Latics sprung into life late on to score twice and secure their points. They could be caught out again at this improving Barnsley side.

Impressive Tykes have the edge

Barnsley have won four of their last seven league matches (D2 L1), as many as they had in their previous 31 games. They have sprung back into life since the restart, taking four points and keeping two clean sheets from two games while denting Millwall and QPR’s playoff hopes. That could be down to the age of their squad. At 22 years and 345 days, Barnsley have the youngest average starting XI in the Championship this season. Given the break in play and the heavy fixture list, that’s going to be a massive boost.

However, we also have to credit the job that Struber has done at Oakwell. Most importantly, the Tykes have conceded just 29 times in 23 games. Before he arrived, they shipped 33 goals in 16. Their recent clean sheets have followed a trend, with Barnsley conceding in only two of their last seven matches.

Meanwhile, the visitors have kept only three clean sheets in their last 19 away matches in all competitions. To make matters worse, Blackburn have kept one clean sheet in their last 14 league meetings with Barnsley, conceding exactly twice in their last five such games against the Tykes. As a result, we are backing Barnsley to win this clash, while a 2-0 home victory is our correct score prediction.
