Champions look set for a tricky start

Basel kickstart the defence of their Swiss Super League title with a trip to St. Gallen and it could be a frustrating beginning for the champions at Kybunpark.

Basel had the best away record in Switzerland last season, winning nine and drawing five of their 19 games on their travels, recording victory in four of their final five road assignments.

However, the last two meetings between this pair, which both came at this venue, have ended in score draws and St. Gallen performs exceptionally well when armed with home advantage.

Enrico Maaben’s side lost only three of their 18 home league games last season and they showed their capabilities as they made the league phase of the Conference League.

Basel had a productive summer with the arrivals of Philip Otele from Al-Wahda and Koba Koindredi joining on a season-long loan from Sporting, but they have also lost some key players with Leon Avdullahu, Axel Kayombo and Maurice Malone notable departures.

Both teams played out score draws with La Liga outfit Villarreal in their final pre-season friendly and this could be a similar scenario.
