No margin for error in Primeira Liga title race

Benfica are neck-and-neck with Sporting Lisbon in the race for the Primeira Liga title and they can stay on the winning trail when they welcome AVS to the Estadio da Luz.

Back in March Benfica were dumped out of the Champions League by Barcelona but they have since been on an exceptional run domestically, reeling off seven wins and a draw in their subsequent eight games.

On Wednesday they completed a 9-0 aggregate win over fourth-tier club Tirsense in the semi-finals of the Taca de Portugal, setting up a final with Sporting.

But before then they will also face Sporting in the league next month and they know the importance of getting maximum points from their two league matches before then.

Benfica could be breached

The first is a home clash with AVS and Benfica have been terrific on their own patch this term, winning 13 of their 15 home league games.

But they were breached twice by Arouca in a 2-2 draw in their most recent home league game and AVS, who are fighting for their lives in the relegation playoff position, can get on the scoresheet in defeat.

As for a correct score, Benfica should be in the goals again and 3-1 is the way to go.
