Boca Juniors vs Union Santa Fe Predictions

Sunday’s Superliga Argentina action sees Boca Juniors doing battle with Union de Santa Fe in La Bombonera. The hosts arrive as big favourites to win the match but an open and exciting game is expected to be in order.

Whilst Boca Juniors would much rather be contesting the Copa Libertadores final this weekend, as rivals River Plate are, they can only focus on the task at hand, which is this league match. Indeed, having lost their domestic crown to Racing Club last season, running out kings of Argentina is a real objective for El Xeneize this term and winning games like Sunday’s is going to be key if they are to do so.

With an impressive 25 points from 13 matches, Boca head into this gameweek top of the table and confidence can certainly be high coming into the game, particularly given their home strength. Gustavo Alfaro’s men have won 10 of their last 15 league games at La Bombonera and if they play to their maximum in this fixture; that should become 11 from 16.

Meanwhile, after an 8th place finish last season that saw them qualify for the Copa Sudamericana for the second year running, hopes were high of having a strong campaign in Union ranks. However, currently 16th with just 16 points from 13 games, the side are yet to really get going.

Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for El Tate, with an average of 1.07 a game plunged in but keeping them out is proving their downfall, conceding an even bigger average of 1.38. Even over their last 3 games, Union have scored 5 times but conceded 6 and that has them travelling to the capital confident in hurting Boca offensively but also highly unlikely to keep them at bay.

Ultimately, this is a match Boca really should be winning. On paper, they are a stronger side than Union in all areas of the pitch and with a big home support behind them, they should have more than enough quality to get the job does, a feeling that is more than reflected in the odds on offer as far as the betting goes.

Indeed, backing a home win doesn’t really offer great value on the full time line and we instead like the looking of backing both nets to be hit. Union have scored in their last 5 away games and despite their home strength, Boca have conceded once in their last 3 home league matches. We certainly think Union can score in the capital on Sunday but also don’t think it’s likely to count for much, with a 3-1 margin of home victory on the cards.
