Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Predictions
- Over 3.5 goals has been a winning bet in six of the last eight German Supercup games
- 11 of the last 14 Der Klassiker meetings have produced at least four goals
- Bayern could be without a few regular starters
Der Klassiker rivals battle for Franz Beckenbauer Supercup
Bayern Munich have had a stranglehold in the German Supercup, now known as the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, for the last decade with seven wins in the last ten years and they head into the latest edition as the clear favourites against bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund.
BVB do hold a couple of advantages, however, as the game takes place at their Signal Iduna Park home and Bayern probably won’t be at full strength.
England skipper Harry Kane and French pair Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano are yet to feature for the Bavarian giants in pre-season after their World Cup exertions. The trio did return to training last week and should be in the squad, but all three will see their game time limited and will probably start on the bench.
Dortmund will be without key defender Nico Schlotterbeck due to injury but otherwise they look in better shape than Bayern for Saturday’s big game.
Expect a high-scoring affair
Backing BVB to win at a big price is tempting but the better starting point could be to look at the total goals market and over 3.5 stands out at just shy of evens.
Dortmund’s last two pre-season games have seen them face Arsenal and Roma and both of those games saw at least four goals scored. Bayern’s last friendly assignment was a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig.
This fixture has tended to produce high-scoring games in recent years as over 3.5 goals has been a winning bet in six of the last eight editions of the German Supercup, seven of which have involved Bayern. The head-to-head record also suggests plenty of goals could be on the cards as 11 of the last 14 meetings between these Bundesliga heavyweights across all competitions have produced at least four goals, including a 3-2 Bayern win at this venue in February.
Bayern won both Bundesliga Der Klassiker clashes last season but both games were decided by one-goal margins. BVB haven’t beaten their fierce rivals at home since the 2019 Supercup but this fixture looks a good opportunity to end that run due to the fact they are a little bit ahead of Bayern in terms of their work over pre-season and Niko Kovac’s side are definitely worth some consideration as big price underdogs.
There will be more value in the Dortmund players in the goalscorers market and Serhou Guirassy stands out as a contender for an anytime effort. Guirassy finished with 17 goals in the Bundesliga last season and was on target against Roma at the weekend.
