Roles reversed as Brest take on Marseille

Champions League-chasing Brest entertain mid-table Marseille on Sunday evening in a matchup where the traditional roles have been reversed.

After 11th and 14th-placed finishes the past two seasons, Eric Roy’s side are pushing the likes of Nice and Monaco for the likely runners-up spot behind Paris Saint-Germain this term. Winless in five in the league, Marseille are seven points further back with plenty of work to do if they are to match their top-three finishes of the past two campaigns.

Les Phoceens drew 2-2 with Shakhtar Donetsk in Hamburg on Thursday after failing to hold onto a stoppage-time lead given to them by Iliman Ndiaye in a match full of mistakes. Gennaro Gattusos’s side have now drawn five of their last six games and appear to have lost the killer’s touch.

Both teams have been unable to break the drawing habit

Brest are not averse to a draw either with three of their last four matches having finished in stalemate. Ligue 1 basement club Clermont rescued a point against les Pirates last weekend in a 1-1 draw that saw both teams finish with 10 men.

Brest’s first-choice keeper Marco Bizot will serve a suspension this week after reacting to some provocation, leaving young backup Gregoire Coudet with some big shoes to fill. He was beaten three times on his only previous start against top-flight opposition this season and may be faced with a shoot-on-sight policy from Marseille.

Both teams to score in this contest looks playable given the circumstances around Brest’s goalkeeper and the fact that the vast majority of these two clubs’ recent matches have witnessed goals at each end.
