Dundalk don’t convince in defence

Dundalk could continue their superb home form against Bohemians on Friday, but the visitors are a dangerous side that will carry a serious goal threat. Stephen O’Donnell’s side enjoyed probably their best home display of the season in a 4-1 derby win over Drogheda United at Oriel Park a fortnight ago.

But the Lilywhites were taught a lesson by the Students last weekend when they went down to ten men and a second-half comeback saw UCD grab a 2-2 draw. We’ll never know if they could have seen it out with a full compliment on the pitch, but after five clean sheets in their first nine league games of the campaign, they haven’t blanked any of their last five opponents now.

Centre-back Andy Boyle will be suspended for this game and any disruption to the heart of Dundalk’s defence will encourage Bohemians, who claimed a 1-1 draw at league leaders Derry City last time out. Bohs took a deserved lead through a fine finish by Promise Omochere before a fortuitous penalty helped the Candystripes get back on terms.

Keith Long’s side are unbeaten in their last five away league games, having scored in each, so our preference here is to back both teams to score at a slightly shorter price than a Dundalk home win. Both teams have scored in the last three Dundalk home league games too, including their wins over Shelbourne and Drogheda – the two teams just below Bohemians in the current table.

A 2-1 home victory seems the best way to play the correct score market as Dundalk average just over two goals per game at home in 2022 while only once this year have Bohs hit multiple goals on the road.
