England Women vs Germany Women Predictions

  • England have won 11 consecutive matches (including extra-time), the best such run in their history.
  • Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses have smashed several records this tournament, including the biggest ever Euros victory (8-0 vs Norway) and biggest semi-final win (4-0 vs Sweden).
  • England have won their last four matches against top-10 ranked nations – a run which began against Germany in February.
  • Germany have only won two of their last seven matches against teams currently in the top 10 of the FIFA rankings, losing two such games this year.

Lionesses on verge of history

Maybe, just maybe, it’s finally coming home. Having racked up the biggest European Championship win in history by thrashing Norway 8-0 in Group A, England recorded the tournament’s biggest ever semi-final victory in a four-goal rout of Sweden, ending a run of three consecutive major semi-final losses to make their first Women’s Euros final since 2009.

While Sunday’s showpiece should be far more challenging, there’s every reason to believe Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses can make history. They’ve won 11 consecutive matches, the longest such run in their history, with four coming against teams in the world’s top 10 – including Germany back in February. England’s tally of 20 tournament goals dwarves that of every other team this summer, and they’ve still only conceded four times in 19 matches under Wiegman, and just once in the Euros.

Die Nationalelf looking to ruin Wembley party

As for the side standing in England’s way, it had to be Germany. The eight-time European champions, by far the most successful side in the tournament’s history, battled to a narrow win over a strong France team on Wednesday, and have never lost a European final. Their bid for glory has been led by lethal striker Alexandra Popp, who has scored in each of their five games, while Die Nationalelf will hope to have the creative Klara Buhl back from her Covid-enforced semi-final absence.

However, despite Germany’s reputation for performing on the big stage, England will be optimistic regarding their record against elite opposition. Germany have won their last two matches against top-10 opponents in France and Spain, but had gone without victory in their five previous such contests, losing to England and Canada in 2022. Meanwhile, Germany trail England for almost every on-ball statistic at the Euros; including goals, attempts, passing accuracy and share of possession, and may spend long periods on the back foot.

It’s coming home?

Given England’s relentless progress at their home tournament, their terrific record against elite opponents under Wiegman, and their February win over a strong German side, we’re backing them to end 56 years of tournament hurt on Sunday – without the need for extra-time or penalties.

Meanwhile, Beth Mead will be looking to out-gun Popp to clinch the Golden Boot after netting six goals across the tournament so far, and represents a prudent anytime goalscorer punt, given Ellen White’s selfless work at the tip of the hosts’ attack.

England’s record of 15 clean sheets in 19 games under Wiegman, meanwhile, can help them to a 2-0 victory on the biggest stage.
