Sky Blues aiming to avoid matching unwanted record

Coventry are yet to pick up a point or score a goal since returning to the Premier League, two records they will be aiming to put right when they welcome Brighton to the CBS Arena on Sunday.

The Sky Blues have opened their first top-flight campaign in more than a quarter of a century with defeats to nil against Arsenal, Hull and Manchester City, although they did produce an improved performance against the latter at the Etihad last weekend.

Frank Lampard’s side spurned several clear-cut opportunities in that game and scoring goals may be an issue for Coventry, with only Aston Villa managing fewer efforts on target across the opening three matchweeks.

It is 107 years since Coventry lost their opening four matches of a league season, while in the Premier League only once before has a team lost and failed to score in their first four fixtures, Crystal Palace in 2017-18, although they did go on to finish 11th that season.

Seagulls have the nous to come through

Brighton have had no such scoring issues, netting 12 across their last four games in all competitions, a run that includes putting four past Villa and three on Chelsea in their last away fixture.

The Seagulls also have a strong record when facing newly-promoted sides, losing just one of their last 14 such head-to-heads, while no team in the Premier League this season has created more big chances (15) or produced a higher xG (7.4) than Fabian Hurzeler’s men.

As an established top-flight outfit, Brighton should have the nous to negotiate this trip to the West Midlands and leave their hosts staring down the barrel of a fourth league defeat on the bounce.

Vuskovic a relative goal machine

Brighton spent big to bring in defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham, reportedly breaking their transfer record to land the highly-rated 19-year-old, who has already started paying back some of that fee with his equaliser in last week’s draw with Leeds.

He may be still a teenager, but Vuskovic already has 18 club goals to his name and earlier this year netted for the first time at senior international level for Croatia.

At 6 ft 4 in, Vuskovic is a real threat from set pieces and is more than capable of grabbing his second Brighton goal this weekend.
